Judge David D. Banta was an instructor in the School of Law at Indiana University as well as an officer of the Indiana University Board of Trustees. This collection consists of three series and is largely comprised of manuscripts of Banta's history of Indiana University.

David Demaree Banta was born on May 23, 1833 and died on April 9, 1896. He received two degrees from Indiana University, BS in 1855 and an LLB in 1857. Banta received a LLD from Franklin College in 1888. Banta married Melissa Elizabeth Riddle Perrin on June 16, 1856, and the couple had three children.
